New technologies should be developed in accordance with the needs of the health system as a whole and with the aim to integrate medical specialties, organizational models, and social systems. The task will develop a case study on the Regional Health Services and look specifically at a set of technological innovations employed to improve the relationship between clinicians and key stakeholders to gain a perspective on the aspects to be improved. The quadruple helix framework provides an integrated perspective encompassing four key areas: university, government, industry, media and culture. The task will illustrate how open innovation takes place within an innovation system that extends beyond a single hospital to provide results on the role of technological factors that are of more general interests for programs of health promotion and prevention.
Brief description of the activities and of the intermediate results
During the period November ‘23 to March ’24 the group involved in task 4.5 has been engaged in the analysis of European innovation ecosystems to identify patterns of development of new practices in healthcare systems. In particular, the quadruple helix innovation framework was identified as a model of innovation.
After a thorough literature review, it was decided to identify in which ecosystems new practices have been developed through the fourfold helix framework. The group identified the European network RSCN (Reference Site of Collaborative Network), The Network for all Active and Healthy Aging Reference Site regions pursuing a life-course approach to active and healthy aging, as the reference system for analysis.
Through a desk analysis activity, all the good practices developed in the different RSs that are part of the Network and that have been implemented in different health systems are being identified. The next phase is the development of case studies on Local Health Ecosystems. We will look specifically at the technology employed and the relationship that clinicians and key stakeholders have with it. The case studies will explore the systems’ strengths and weaknesses in order to gain a perspective on those aspects that need improvement within the system.
Main policy, industrial and scientific implications
This phase of the work is a preliminary contribution to a new understanding of the current setting of the healthcare systems and to possible further steps for its improvement in a framework of multidisciplinary and multi-actors’ collaborations. The identification of a reference model and shared good practices can support the development of innovation in a logic of sustainability of individual-centered health systems by contributing to health equity and services outcomes for citizens.
