Biosketch: Francesca Sarno is engineer and PhD in Architecture. She has been engaged in teaching and research for several years in the field of Architectural and Urban Design at the Department of Civil, Building and Environmental Engineering (DICEA) at Sapienza University of Rome. She completed her postdoctoral studies at the Escola Politécnica of the Universidade de São Paulo (EPUSP); during her doctoral studies, she also spent a period at the Faculdade de Arquitetura e Urbanismo (FAU) of the same university. She is a member of the LAPIS research group - Laboratory on Housing, Project, Investigation, Experimentation at DICEA. Her research mainly focuses on modern and contemporary Brazilian architecture and the architectural culture of Latin America from a transatlantic perspective. In recent years, her studies have concentrated on the compositional and construction aspects of developments in the Global South, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, and on issues related to housing, especially in the context of regenerating informal settlements. She is currently investigating the development of co-living and co-housing for the well-being of the elderly population, from an urban-architectural perspective. She has published essays and articles on her research topics, participated in national and international conferences, and has taken part in design competitions, earning awards and recognition.
