Older subjects with dementia may need the assistance of family and/or professional caregivers. The social, psychological, medical, and economic burden of the caregivers may negatively impact on older subjects with dementia, accelerating trajectories to caregiver morbidity and burnout and to patient functional impairment, comorbidity and institutionalization. Ethnical and other socio-demografic factor may also influence caregiver performance and health. E-health solutions have been developed for the empowerment of caregivers, but were not specifically designed to support caregiver health. The WP ambition is to shift the focus of e-health solutions to caregiver health and well-being and its bidirectional interactions with patient health and well-being, as a central factor for the empowerment of caregivers and for the amelioration of caregiver and patient quality of life, preserving cost-effectiveness owing to reduced use of unnecessary health services.
