Biosketch: Giulia Sautariello is a second year PhD student in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Florence. She has a Master Degree in Molecular Biotechnology. The PhD activity concerns the study of the molecular mechanisms of contraction and its regulation in skeletal and cardiac muscles from healthy and mutated animal models in relation to ageing. These goals are pursued through the application of biophysical techniques at different levels in the hierarchical organization of the contractile machinery (whole muscle, muscle bundle, single fibre). The structural dynamics of the muscle molecular motor myosin II is determined in situ, combining sarcomere-level mechanics and X-ray diffraction from synchrotron light at the ESRF synchrotron in Grenoble (France).
